Let discuss a topic that many dog owners fight about today, Force Free training.

Lets be clear we are here only discussing what Force Free training is and way its become the most favourable method especially among the AD community. We neither promote or distastes personal training choices. We just seek to talk about what Force free actually is for those who might not know or be new to dog training.

Monk brings this pleasant reminder we don't

want any harmful disagreements in the comments but are happy for light, curious, honest, discussion.

WHAT IS IT?

In short and as clear as we can make it from research, talking to people, and reading as many studies that didn't start referencing each other, Force Free training is exactly what it says on the tin. The Dog is trained with out any force or punishment wither that be defined as Yanking/Checking leads, using verbal commands (aggressive growls, shouts etc), or physical punishments. Most of these are often found in training methods the involve rumble/buzz/shock collars, choke chains, withholding treats or praise. When thinking about how to train a dog, anything that causes a dog pain, discomfort or fear is deemed as using Force.

THE WHY

If you asked the public if they hurt their dog you'd be greeted with a unearthly horrified response or the occasional "I've accidently stepped on them". Force free training makes a point that if it hurts the dog or scared them and even causes discomfort then why inflict in on your dog, a friend and family member.

So what does Force Free offer? PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE! Basically it runs on the principle of the dog doing a behaviour you want and you make it magical by giving the dog treats, attention or toys then your more likely to build more successful repercussions of that behaviour. Focused on a positive and trusting training relationship can build the way for behaviours the dog does because they want to not because its forced to. There's been a fair few studies that show the success this training method has produced. Another good point for sceptics is that the same type of education given to children also got quicker and more successful results.

IN SUMMARY

Firstly, Do your research, find your morals and understand that a lot the time you can get results with the simplest methods. Secondly, talk to experienced Trainers and find out their takes on your situation. Lastly, training is support to take time, be frustrating and cost you blood, sweat and tears, that is how we all achieve amazing working lives with our companions.
